Print-this-page function – a bad idea and its solution

Posted by admin on 28 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Great Web Tips

Reading in a browser is different than from paper
Writing text for online reading is different than composing an article for a printed magazine. One assumption is that visitors are “jumpier” than readers. Subtitles, shorter sentences and paragraphs are key-elements in formatting online text to best effect.

The visitor’s interest needs to be captured before clicking on the next link. This is comparable to newspapers, where many pieces of information compete against each other on the same page.

Online content is printed on a crispy, blank page. There simply is no competition. The same text which was effective on the screen might look very bland printed. The short content, tuned to convey a message by starting every line with the perfect keyword, might look very lost when printed on a sheet of paper using the whole page-width.

Better to have no information than one that is out of context
Web-pages are not structured sequentially – unlike a book. The whole point of a web-site is to enrich it with links, connecting it to information that the visitor might find useful. Web-sites tend to tear information into chunks or create many entry-pages, leading further into the site. That makes very much sense in regards to online reading. Also advertising profits from that, because more pages mean more ads served and better information, what the user is interested in.

Word on the net is that 80% of traffic does not hit the homepage but directly jumps deep into a site. If the accessed page is only a segment of the relevant information, a printout is useless or at the very least out of context. It is not possible to really understand the quarterly numbers, when the company-strategy leading to those results is not known.

Having incoherent information lying on “to be read” stacks can be very detrimental because the context is lost even further by time passing by.

Loose control over the content
Content needs to change, because contrary to a printed page, a web-site is expected to be up-to-date. The owner of the site is generally in control of the content published.

A printed page represents a snapshot in time of the ever changing content. Not only does the publisher loose control, but the information is no longer accurate.

Goodbye branding, goodbye image
Information is conveyed through many channels. There is factual content -usually text – but at the same time and equally important there is soft-content. Screen-design, key-messages or special-features for example are key elements, which can not be accurately displayed in print.

These channels merge together to convey “the image”. Most of the time, this is a carefully planned part of corporate branding and does not come cheap. The simple “print this page” button reduces the elaborate corporate communications to a “default-font” page, where the logo is displayed within a dark, square box, the browser adds a cryptic web-address as a headline and the styled product-description is reduced to a two-liner with no hyphenation.

It stops the user from browsing
Designing a page aims at one thing only – keep the visitor engaged and interested. Printing a page can be a dangerous break in a flow the visitor is now comfortable with. A popup appears asking to select a printer. A choice needs to be made, taking the mind away from the carefully planned information-architecture. Usually people wait very anxiously and even reach for the page coming out of the printer before it is finished. Then they look at it and ask themselves “where was I?” This interruption might be enough not to return to browsing.

Why would I want to print a page?
What are the main reasons that a visitor wants to use a “print-this-page” function.

- Forward the information to someone
- Store the information for later use
- Read the information offline

These are all valid needs. Printing out an individual web-page might however not be the best solution.

The solution lies somewhere else
Forwarding the link, maybe with some prepared text, should take care of the first action. Well formatted bookmarks using descriptive URLs and intelligently hinting at this feature on the page itself, will solve the second requirement. Both leave the information within the framework and control of the site.

If information needs to be printed it needs to be prepared and put into context. An example: a good print-version of a product page should contain a description, detailed information, some essentials about the company and maybe a reference where to purchase the product offline.

A print-version requires a format that is intended for printing and not one intended to be used within a browser. In order to correctly use elements from the corporate identity or appealingly display text, PDF might be the best choice available for now. From the perspective of online usability, PDF is not unchallenged. But in this case we are talking about physical, printed usability. And if it is the wish of the user to print, it is the command to the site. But let’s get the best out of it – it is the visitors return ticket.

Exclusive Internet Mortgage Leads

Posted by admin on 24 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Realty Management

Exclusive Internet Mortgage Leads are exclusive Mortgage Leads that can be purchased online. Being a relatively new phenomenon in the mortgage industry, Internet Mortgage Leads are seen to have given unprecedented freedom and flexibility to Borrowers, Brokers and Lenders. All that one has to do is to search for “internet leads”. Search engines display several accredited Internet Mortgage Lead Providers just at a click of the mouse or the keyboard button.

Websites of Mortgage Lead Providers bring the Borrowers, Brokers and Lenders under `one roof’. Borrowers fill up the Loan Request Forms [Leads] at the websites. Loan officers or Mortgage Brokers register themselves by quoting their lending criteria at the same websites. They browse the leads [or sometimes receive them by email by quoting how many and what type of leads that they require] and make a selection of the leads that they like to purchase. They sometimes use filters , based on the following parameters, to be more specific about their choice of leads: Credit Rating, Type of Loan required, Loan Amount Required, Home Equity, Geographic Location (State and Area Code) etc.

Based on the request, the Lead Providers sell the leads to the broker or the loan officer on an `exclusive’ basis. These leads cost around $20 to $40 per lead. The price depends on various factors and differs from one loan type to another and from one firm to another. Brokers can make their payment online.

Once brokers buy their leads, some websites even offer efficient, password-protected, Online Lead Management Systems for use by the broker. By using the system, the broker can customize contents, manage emails, obtain information on current interest rates, and much more. Some websites even offer sales training to brokers who are registered with the site.

Exclusive Internet Mortgage Leads are a boon to all those in the Mortgage Industry today.

Exclusive Mortgage Leads provides detailed information about exclusive mortgage leads, exclusive internet mortgage leads, exclusive telemarketing mortgage leads, exclusive real time mortgage leads and more. Exclusive Mortgage Leads is the sister site of Life Insurance Leads.

Low Credit Score Mortgage Refinance – Refinance Loans for All Credit Types

Posted by admin on 24 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Realty Management

Having bad credit may seem like the end of the world. Because of a
negative credit rating, you may be turned down for personal loans, credit
cards, auto loans, and mortgages. Those unfamiliar with bad credit
lenders may attempt to obtain financing through a bank or credit union.
However, these financial institutions rarely offer bad credit loans. To get
approved for financing with bad credit, you must select lenders that
specialize in all credit types.

What are Bad Credit Refinancing Lenders?

Declining interest rates have many homeowners contemplating
refinancing. Years ago, the average home interest rate was about 9 percent. Today,
rates are as low as 5 percent. Those who refinance will receive a
significantly lower rate. Hence, their monthly mortgage payment will also
decrease. The extra money could be used to start a savings accounts or
payoff bills.

Low credit score individuals can greatly benefit from a refinancing.
Lenders that specialize in bad credit refinancing are called sub prime
lenders or high risk lenders. Their objective is to help bad credit
homebuyers acquire a mortgage or loan at reasonable rates. If you were to
apply for a loan with a prime lender, the rates quoted will be much
higher, which defeats the purpose of refinancing.

Advantages of Low Credit Score Refinance Mortgages

Even though bad credit mortgages may include additional fees, these
loans are perfect for rebuilding your credit. Furthermore, you have the
option of a cash-out refinancing. This involves refinancing your mortgage
and borrowing some of your home’s equity. This is great for people
hoping to improve their low credit score. The funds can be used to
consolidate and eliminate debt, which will greatly increase your credit rating.

Locating Bad Credit Refinance Lenders Online

Applying for a bad credit refinancing online is quick and convenient.
Many sub prime and high risk lenders have online application forms. You
must supply information concerning income, employment, credit rating,
and desired loan amount. After submitting information, the lender will
review your application and remit a quote. The quote will consist of
offered rate, terms, mortgage payment, and estimated closing costs.
Applicants may accept or decline the offer. Before accepting an offer,
request quotes from at least four bad credit lenders.

Designing an Office with Glass Partitions and Stackable Walls

Posted by admin on 22 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Home Improvement

Companies using glass as a modern architectural material in building glass cubicles, walls and partitions have come to rely on European glass hardware for quality and dependability.

When designing an office with glass partitions and stackable walls, a house with glass shower cubicles or a shop with glass swing doors and glass storage units, the requirement for good quality hardware becomes paramount.

The hardware generally needed for such work:

Door Hinges

Hinges allow the movement of the glass doors or framed glass doors as the case maybe. They are usually available in stainless steel, carbon steel or brass and sometimes are anodized to suit the décor, style or requirement of the user. They are fitted with bushes impregnated with some lubricant to ensure smooth operation. They need to be designed for long life and need to fit the bill of intended door type. Ratman Co UK’s HI-Load hinges offer twenty-five years of warranty! There is Lift- off hinges that allow the whole door to be removed easily; Swing clear hinges that give greater clearing for the door and is very useful in hospitals etc.

Pivots and spindles

Pivots and Spindles attached to the floor allow heavy glass doors to be used as swing doors. Such Pivot systems need to be very sturdy and fail-safe.

Does a Mile of Running Equal Four Miles of Cycling?

Posted by admin on 19 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: House Of Shopping

During the cold winter months when snow and ice are on the ground, it’s too dangerous to ride a bike, so many cyclists run instead. The standard comparison is that one mile of running equals four miles of cycling, but that’s lousy science. Although running requires the same amount of energy per mile at any speed (110 calories per mile), riding is affected by wind resistance so the faster you ride, the more energy you use. So you have to compare running and cycling at different cycling speeds.

Dr. Edward Coyle of The University of Texas in Austin determined average values of oxygen consumption by cyclists to develop a table to estimate the approximate caloric equivalence between running and cycling. He found that if you ride 20 miles at 15 mph, you burn 620 calories (20 miles X 31 calories per mile = 620 calories). Take the 620 calories and divide them by 110 calories per mile for running and you get 5.63 miles to burn the same number of calories. So riding a bicycle 20 miles at 15 miles per hour is equal to running 5.6 miles at any speed.

Coyle’s derived conversion figures are for an average-size adult (approximately 155 pounds). A larger cyclist would divide by a slightly higher number; a smaller cyclist, by a slightly lower one. Wind and hills are not accounted for in the table; nor is drafting, which can reduce your energy expenditure by up to one-third.

The number of miles ridden divided by the conversion factor for the speed of riding equals the number of miles running to use the same amount of energy. Here’s the conversion table:

MPH:Calories per mile:Conversion factor
10: 26: 4.2
15: 31: 3.5
20: 38: 2.9
25: 47: 2.3
30: 59: 1.9

How to use the table: For riding 20 miles at 10 miles per hour, divide 20 miles by the conversion factor of 4.2 to get 4.8 miles running. For riding at 20 miles at 20 miles per hour, divide 20 miles distance by 2.9 conversion factor to get 6.9 miles running. For riding 20 miles at 25 miles per hour, divide 20 miles by 2.3 to get 8.7 miles running. For riding 20 miles at 30 miles per hour, divide 20 miles by 1.9 to get 10.5 miles running.

Insightful Information about Income Drawdown – Financial Guide

Posted by admin on 13 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Economy + Finance

When you stop working you do not have to remove your retirement fund at once. As a choice, you can delay acquiring a retirement income until the ripe old age of seventy-five & if you do so you may well discover you get a more lucrative package. It’s called income draw down.

When you are somewhere aged between 50 and 75 you are automatically permitted to postpone the purchase of your retirement annuity from an insurance company. Instead, you are able to pull out as much as one-hundred and twenty percent of the retirement fund that could have been acquired using Government Actuary rates, and leave the remaining cash safe until you call for it. On your side, all you ought to do is to ensure that you obtain a pension annuity by the point you get to seventy five. To read all the latest information about Income Drawdown, visit the First Place Financial website now!

Nevertheless, what would happen if you decided to take the income draw down selection, & then departed this life? If this did turn out then your surviving companion or dependant(s) would then have 3 options: either take a lump sum, after tax at thirty five percent, or go on with income extraction, or buying an annuity pension with the cash. Your surviving wife/husband has until they reach sixty years old to postpone the attainment of an annuity, but no benefits are permitted to be offered in the intervening time.

Why choose income draw down? Well for the most part because it could result in you earning a healthier retirement income from your particular pension by doing so. Secondly, you can pick precisely when you want to acquire the annuity, so if you give up work at a time when annuity rates are considerable low, waiting might well be a clever option. If the residual investments improve as hoped for, then collectively with the reality that annuity rates climb with age, you may ultimately be able to procure a higher pension than you would have secured in the beginning.

It also means that when you depart this life your spouse or those legally responsible are supported economically, since they are officially entitled to the remaining assets, as discussed above.

There are dangers as a consequence though. If venture performance on the remaining stocks & shares is below par, the level of settlement payable could lower. And it’s important to keep in mind that there is no promise that the pension obtained will in the end be anywhere near the total amount that could have been acquired at the beginning.

How to use Content to Improve Search Engine Placemtent

Posted by admin on 12 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Great Web Tips

Just how important is content to the search engines? We all know that well written content is paramount to maintaining repeat traffic to a web site but just what qualities pique the ‘interest’ of the major search engines? This can be a convoluted topic where the unique characteristics of each search engine are considered to create highly appealing content. In most cases, however, the general concepts are all that you will need to know to attain a positive search engine placement, especially when you are focusing on less competitive goals. After all, accuracy is not always required when your target is as big as a barn and you are only a few feet away.

For maximum effectiveness, content should be:

Unique

Content should be written uniquely for each page of your web site. Why? Well, when a search engine spider indexes each page, it constantly searches for any patterns that match known spam practices. For example, an old (and unfortunately still used by less knowledgeable ‘optimizers’) spam tactic is to create numerous pages with basically the same content to get multiple placements under a single phrase. (Go to www.nikosoftware.com to see examples of how our clients use unique content that can be used on multiple pages)

Fresh

Search engines are always on the lookout for web sites that offer information useful to their users. If Google found new content every time it indexed your web site, your site would instantly gain credibility because this would indicate that your site is constantly evolving. Following the logic of a search engine (and they are all essentially logical), an evolving web site is likely to be more interesting to searchers since the content is up-to-date. As a result your site has a better chance of obtaining better placements and maintaining the positions gained. Relevant

Relevance can not be emphasized enough! It is important that when you create the copy for a web page you try to maintain the overall relevance of the topic. In other words, if your web page has been created to describe the process of “building cabinets” then maintain that focus throughout the copy. Do not skip to a totally unrelated topic such as (an extreme example) how to change tires… this will dilute the keywords on the page and it will make it more difficult for a visiting search engine to determine the placement that the page should achieve. A great deal of the SEO (search engine optimization) process is ensuring topical clarity throughout a web site. By ensuring that the copy on each page clearly indicates a desired topic (in this case the page focuses on building cabinets), you will leave a search engine with little choice but to place your web site under your desired listing.

Visible

Seems simple right? Well, there are many ways to unwittingly damage the visibility of a beautifully written web site. Many of the following elements are straight out of search engine placement 101 but they must be noted: Do Not Use Frames: There are few worse blocks to search engine indexing than framesets. If your site is using frames and all of your content is found within a frameset then you may need to reconsider a redesign. The “why” of this is simple; the home page actually has no content on it other than meta tags and a title because the page is only there to ‘call’ the framesets (which are the pages with the content). As a result, the search engines only see a page with a few links on it and some Meta tags; a very poor recipe for search engine placements.

Do Not Create a Site Totally in Flash: Flash is a beautiful medium for advanced and often engaging multimedia BUT, it should not be the sole medium for your web site because the content within flash is not viewable by a search engine. If you wish to use Flash then we recommend interspersing it throughout a web site much like images are. This way you can include the same impressive interaction capabilities and you can still write your content in html; the sole medium that search engines can index. The same rule applies to images; if you want your text to be found and indexed by the search engines then do not include it within a graphic.

Note: Image ALT tags do the job somewhat by providing an ALTernative copy of the text shown in the image, however, this is a poor substitution for true visible text.

Provide Alternative Navigation Options: Most sites employ a graphical navigation method which provides a very attractive and often functional method of navigating a web site. By ALT tagging each of the menu buttons with a topical summary of the destination page, graphical menus can even be effective for search engines. There are, however, a couple of alternative navigational items that we at Niko Software ( www.nikosoftware.com ) recommend; a mirrored text menu at the bottom of the page and a text link to a sitemap located somewhere within every page. The reason behind the text menu becomes clearer when you understand that hyperlinked text is more credible than a linked graphic. This is because the text within the link can be read and, as with any properly designed navigation, the menu’s text link defines the topic of the destined page. Also, since this text is visible to visitors (unlike less visible ALT tags) there is less likelihood that you are trying to fool the search engines. This adds further credibility to the overall topic of the destined page which, in combination with the correctly written content, creates an even better atmosphere for top placements.

The sitemap is useful because of a certain well-known characteristic of search engines; they often take a long time to index pages that are located deep within a web site. So by creating a sitemap (preferably with text links) that is accessible from any page, you provide the search engines with a direct route to every page within your site. Not only do you facilitate a faster crawl of your web site but you provide the search engines with more text links which may further increase the credibility of your content.

Different Types of Web Hosting Explained

Posted by admin on 09 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Great Web Tips

There are many different types of web hosting available. Which type one chooses should hinge upon what one wants to accomplish with his or her web site. Some web hosting services are free, but place ads on web sites. Whereas other web hosting types can be more expensive, but provide a lot more assistance and bandwidth. The four main web hosting types are free web hosting, shared web hosting, and dedicated web hosting (both managed and unmanaged).

Free web hosting is the simplest kind of web hosting that one can get. This type of web hosting is usually supported by ads on hosted web sites. Features for this type of web hosting are limited, and therefore it is a better option for people who are just starting out on the Internet and are interested in having a small site with little traffic. The type of domain one receives in free web hosting is typically a subdomain (yoursite.webhost.com) or a directory (www.webhost.com/~yoursite). Most free web hosts do not have support for MySQL, multiple e-mail accounts, and PHP.

Shared web hosting is actually the most popular type of web hosting service. Shared web hosting allows more than one site to be hosted on the same server. Additionally, the hosts provide system administration. For users that do not want to have the burden of running a sever, shared web hosting is a great choice. The individual hosting plan may differ, but most hosts provide the user with elements such as PHP, ASP, MySQL, more bandwidth, and multiple e-mail addresses. More services are often available in shared web hosting than are available with simple free web hosting (including the ability to have your own domain name!).

The last two types of web hosting are managed dedicated web hosting, and unmanaged dedicated web hosting. Dedicated web hosting is a wise choice for someone who wants more storage and bandwidth, and also wants features that are not available with shared and free web hosting. In dedicated servers, users are not limited to a certain number of databases and e-mail addresses. Additionally, users usually receive a very high amount of bandwidth in comparison to other hosting types. The typical dedicated server plan provides the user with 500 to 1,000GB of monthly bandwidth.

In unmanaged dedicated web hosting, the user is the server administrator. This allows the user the greatest amount of control and flexibility. Of course, many people do not know how to handle the task of being a server administrator and do not want to learn. Therefore, this is not a viable option for some.

When looking for a web host, it is important to consider the purpose of the web site and what one’s capabilities are. Pricing for web hosts is dependant upon the support, reliability, features, and security one wants. Choosing a type of web hosting may seem like a daunting task, but simply doing research and making an educated decision should yield satisfaction and success on this critical matter.

Paul Hanson recommends Net Explorers ( http://www.hosting-netexplorers.co.uk/ ) for quality UK hosting services.
