It is very common for business owners to make mistakes when it comes to marketing. Learning how to market a business can be a lengthy process, full of trial and error. The following are some of the most common mistakes, with some tips on how to avoid them.
Not Defining a Target Market
A target market is the group a business owner is trying to sell to. When a business owner does not define their target market, or makes their target market too wide, they will have a tough time convincing their market to buy.

Building a website can be overwhelming, here are some design tips to help keep you on the right path (or is that web?)
— Designing a Frames-based web site
Frames may make the job of maintaining a big web site easy, but search engines hate them. Most search engines cannot find their way through them and end up indexing only the home page. Lose your frames right away. You will start getting positive improvements the moment you redesign your site without frames.
— Having an all-Flash or graphic-only home page
This is another classic mistake. Many designers design web site home pages like brochures. A beautiful cover which has to be opened to read. But on the Internet every click takes away some prospects. Did they click your ENTER button or the Back button? Search engines need content to index. If you don’t have words on the home page and only a Flash movie or an animated graphic, how will the search engines know what you do?
— Not having a good title
A good title is critical for getting good search engine positions and the most vital thing — the click-through. With the title, you are always walking a tightrope. You need a title with your most important keyword near the beginning but it should still appeal to the human reading the results.
— Hosting your site with a FREE host
Don’t do it. It takes away all your credibility. Most of the search engines don’t even index web sites on free hosts. Even if they do, they rank them quite low.
— Stuffing lots of keywords in the keywords tag
Do you have a keywords tag that lists all the words related to your product in a big long series? This is a certain recipe to invite negative points. Put only the 2-3 most important keywords in there. Here’s a quick test – don’t put any term in the keyword tag if it doesn’t appear at least once in the body copy.
— Not having any outgoing links
Do you know why the Internet is called the Web? Because the web sites link to each other. If you only have incoming links and no outbound links, it’s not appreciated by the search engines as it violates the basic structure of the Web. Because some people try to conserve PageRank (a proprietary index used by Google to measure link popularity), they avoid having any outbound links. This is one big myth. You can get very good points if you have some outbound links with keyword-rich anchor text and preferably keyword-rich target URL also.
— Insisting on session variables and cookies to show information
Session variables are used extensively by ecommerce-enabled sites. This is to trace the path used by the visitor. Shopping cart and various other applications also benefit by using session variables. However it should be possible to visit the various information related and sales pages without needing to have session variables. Since search engine spiders don’t index cookies, they can’t index your pages properly if the navigation requires cookies and session variables.
— Regularly submitting your site to the search engines
“We will submit your site to the top 250,000 search engines every month for only $29.95.” Who has not seen these ads or received Spam with similar messages? And which are those 250,000 search engines? There are only a handful of top search engines worth bothering about. For some sites if you resubmit while you are waiting to be indexed, you entry is pushed to the end of the queue. So you can resubmit regularly and never get indexed!
— Optimizing for more than 2 or 3 search terms
It is virtually impossible to optimize a page for more than 2-3 keywords without diluting everything. Don’t try to work on more than 3 phrases on one page. Split. Get similar phrases together and work on those in this page. Take 2 or 3 out of the other phrases and develop a new page with entirely new copy. Remember, you cannot just copy the same page and squeeze these new phrases in there. It will look very funny to the visitor.

The most successful real estate agents and brokers realize the value of their agency websites and are constantly working to improve them. Unfortunately, many agencies throughout the United States are still working with static websites that are difficult and costly to maintain.
But how do I upgrade? you ask. Often this is not a simple answer. You need to consider the needs of your business and your agents. How will you manage listings? Are you using a Multiple Listing Service (MLS)? Should your agents have access only to certain parts of your administration panel, and not others?
What about logging agent and visitor actions on your website? Here is what you should look for in any real estate management system you contract for:
Dynamic, searchable listings. If your listings are not currently in a database and searchable, they need to be. This feature is the reason so many homes are sold online. It’s the “shopping in your underwear” principle: if a web surfer can access information about your homes at 11pm, and in a bathrobe while watching ER, no less, a whole new window of opportunity is opened, allowing you to showcase your listings 24/7. He immediately emails you and sets up a showing; you arrive at your office the next day, get the email, call him, and you’re on your way to making another sale.
Easy contact methods. All the interactivity on the Net won’t help you if your potential client can’t get in touch with you. Make sure that your newly designed website has plenty of opportunity for users to click to your contact forms: a link from every listing, and multiple contact methods (phone, email, etc.). Don’t require too much information on the form, but make sure you get enough: at least a name, an email address, and a phone number. Also, don’t rely on straight email links to get the job done: many computer users do not have a default email program installed, so when they click on your link all they will find is a setup wizarda confusing and annoying situation for many users.
Lead management. The other end of the line of communication must be tied in: your lead management system must dovetail perfectly with your website. If you have an existing lead management system, see if your web design company has already built an interface for it, or would be willing to build one for your website. If you do not have a lead management system, find a website system that will provide one for you, seamlessly integrated with the site itself, such as the AWS Real Estate Manager.
System logs System logs and user management and user management. Real estate agencies, unfortunately, are not immune to legal issues with personnel and properties. System logs help you track down what was done on your site, when, and by whom. Make sure that whatever real estate website you choose includes a system log that shows you key activity on your site. You’ll thank yourself later when a dispute arises.
Likewise, you’ll need to specifically manage which sections of your site certain agents are allowed to edit, and others they are not. The administration panel of your website should have a section for setting user permissions: whether a user can edit all listings, or only those assigned to him; whether he can add or delete other users on the system; how many listings he can have and how many images attached to each; whether he can access the system logs, etc. These features will help you properly regulate the bandwidth and quota your site uses so you won’t incur extra charges each month, as well as avoiding duplicate work and conflicts among agents.
Self-updating site pages. If you’ve outsourced updating of your real estate website to a web design company, you know how expensive it can get. Such updates need not reach so deep into your agency’s coffers. When researching your new site, see if it provides a tool to allow you to create whole website pages on your own.
But I can’t write webpage code! you say. You shouldn’t need to. If the site is designed correctly, you’ll have a form that walks you through the process of adding page data and content, complete with hyperlinks, images, font formatting, table creation and all the HTML essentialswith nothing required except a little aesthetic sense. Discover how to go about choosing a web hosting provider in ways that 99.5% of the advice on the Internet never mention.
If you struggle with finding good web hosting then using the process I describe could be the answer to one of the biggest problems you can face as a webmaster.
But first I’d like to give you an idea on the scale of the problem in choosing a good web hosting provider. A search on Google for the exact phrase ” web hosting ” returns over 32 Million results and ” web hosting provider ” or ” web hosting company ” produces around 800,000 results.
An IP survey by www.netcraft.com in 2003 found over 40 million web hosts.
Whether you want to believe Google’s 32 Million web hosts or Netcraft’s 40 Million, it gives some indication of just how many web hosting provider ’s there are to choose from.
Google has over 7,800 sites offering advice on ” How to choose a web host. “
But to be frank a lot of advice on the Internet is from sites promoting web hosting provider ’s and resellers, which means it’s not without bias.
If you think ” web hosting review sites ” are a good source of advice, try choosing one from over 6,000 listed by Google. Consider also that many are affiliated to the web hosts they recommend. This can mean not only do they get a sign-up commission, but a regular monthly fee for as long as a customer remains with the web host.
Much of the advice about choosing a web hosting provider talks about how much disk space or bandwidth you need, what type of server to use, or the features you should look for.
It’s important stuff but it doesn’t help in choosing a good web hosting provider.
I say this because disk space and bandwidth are today largely a non-issue, since most web hosting provider’s are competing to offer so much of it, you’d need to have a website the size of CNN’s to use it all.
As for the features offered by web hosts, there’s often little to choose between them, they all generally offer enough of the basics for most websites. If you’re looking for enhanced features like a website builder, adding a shopping cart, taking secure payments or promoting your website then these additional features might influence your choice.
But as a web hosting provider, you still don’t know if they’re any good.
At this point some of you may be thinking you’d read the other customers testimonials, or go to some of the website forums to see what other people have experienced with this host, or post a question to ask for advice.
Well again a word of caution, many forums are also the hangouts for people selling web hosting, so they frequently post replies or offer advice acting like the ordinary Joe. This means the advice can be biased toward or against a particular web hosting provider. One forum you could try that’s dedicated to issues with web hosting is Web Hosting Talk
Oh! Let’s not forget ” Testimonials. ” When was the last time you saw a customer testimonial on the sellers web site that said anything bad about the service or product they provide ?
I have only ever seen it once in the past 5 years and then not for a web hosting provider.
I’ve had web sites hosted with dozens of web hosting provider ’s and made 100’s of inquiries to other web hosting companies that I never even got close to the point of signing up with. I’ve moved some websites two or three times in less than two weeks because a web hosting provider is unable or unwilling to solve problems, or whose server configuration is unable to support the scripts my site needed.
It was after many years of suffering bad web hosts, I finally decided to work out a process that gave me a better chance of finding a good web hosting provider.
It’s a bit like taking out insurance, you don’t know what the insurance company is like until you need to make a claim. As a matter of interest I did an exact search for insurance against bad web hosting and there were no results.
Obviously no one is providing insurance against bad web hosting, which must mean it’s too much of a risk.
I don’t even consider my sites to require anything special or more than any other typical business website. Yet despite all my experience, finding a good web hosting provider is still one of the most difficult website challenges.

Choosing a Web Hosting Provider from 40 Million Other Web Hosts – Pt2
Of course no process is full-proof and it does not mean that the web hosting you find through the search engine filtering and techniques I suggest are the only web hosts capable of providing the services you’re looking for.
You should also not assume because your Google Advanced Search was for web hosting provider ’s with selected features that the sites you are reviewing are guaranteed to have those features.
Check every site on your short list, since search engine’s are far from perfect.
What it does mean is that by using my suggested techniques you are selecting those web hosts who considered things like support, sufficiently important to want to be found for them on Google. Other web hosts may have good support, but the difference is that in your search you did not find them listed for this term.
It could mean support’s not that important to them, even though they provide it.
It’s also worth mentioning that the price of web hosting is not an indicator of the quality of the service. Some lower cost web hosting provider ’s can give a far better service than some medium cost ones.
Conclusions
Using a six stage process I was able to choose from 40 million web hosting provider ’s, a short list of 15 web hosts that met my selection criteria. With a further six stage process I was able to reduce the number of possible web hosting provider ’s down to a choice of 2.
In the final stage the web hosting provider ’s were both asked a number of general and technical questions that resulted in the final choice. Whilst the process is not full-proof I am yet to find a better devised way of choosing a good web hosting provider.

Once we have a website up and running, we need to make sure that all visiting search engines can access all the pages we want them to look at.
Sometimes, we may want search engines to not index certain parts of the site, or even ban other Search Engines from the site all together.
This is where a simple, little 2 line text file called robots.txt comes in.
Robots.txt resides in your websites main directory (on LINUX systems this is your /public_html/ directory), and looks something like the following:
User-agent: *
Disallow:
The first line controls the “bot” that will be visiting your site, the second line controls if they are allowed in, or which parts of the site they are not allowed to visit…
If you want to handle multiple “bots”, then simple repeat the above lines.
So an example:
User-agent: googlebot
Disallow:
User-agent: askjeeves
Disallow: /
This will allow Goggle (user-agent name GoogleBot) to visit every page and directory, while at the same time banning Ask Jeeves from the site completely.
To find a “reasonably” up to date list of robot user names this visit http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/active/html/index.html
Even if you want to allow every robot to index every page of your site, it’s still very advisable to put a robots.txt file on your site. It will stop your error logs filling up with entries from search engines trying to access your robots.txt file that doesn’t exist.
