UK Training
If you train to be a Doctor in the UK your education will be in three stages.

Medical School
Before you get to the wards, you will need to spend some time in the library, lecture halls and classroom, learning some of the basic sciences.

Postgraduate Medical Education
Phase 2 of your training involves either a 5 or 9 year training programme. Everyone completes a 2 year foundation programme to make sure that they are on the medical register. After that point you may wish to enter a 3 year training programme for general practice or a more intense training programme that will result in you being qualified to be a hospital consulant.

Once you have qualified you will need to determine which speciality you would like to focus on. There are some 60 plus specialities to choose from, so you need to take your time and select the field that best suits your temperament and skill strengths.

Continuing Medical Education
Through reading, reflecting on your practice and attending study days, you will be forever improving on your knowledge base and skills.

If your goal is to pursue a medical career and you wish to do this in the UK, then this will be the broad path. There will be subtle variations depending on your own personal circumstances – obviously. If you feel that you may have trouble with your interview skills when applying for a medical school or postgraduate medical post, then try to get decent interview skills training.
